Brazilian born Alexandre, who lives, works, and normally
shows in Paris, came
to New York for the second season in a row to unveil his Tropical Rococo
collection that was inspired by the French Rococo. This translated into a
charming, fresh, offbeat, and eclectic line-up marked by a play on
proportion, different lengths, layering, micro ruffles, and the clashing
colors and mixed prints he has become famous for. He showed some belted
trench coats and safari jackets, abbreviated and shrunken sportswear inspired
(baseball or Eisenhower) jackets, many of which were given a streetwise edge
with narrow jean- like pants tucked into boots, ladylike silk printed bow
blouses, flower necklaces and flowers in the hair, AND quirky cone shaped
hats for an added twist. (He was quoted as observing, "Everything is light,
it's romantic with a twist.")
A man of the world, who is completely global, Alexandre's presentations are
traditionally a direct result of his world travels, so it should not have
been too surprising when the models came out, each serenaded by a black clad
musician (or two, or three) from around the world, which served as the
perfect 'foil' or backdrop to the colorful clothes on display. There was a
Manhattan Samba, a Balkan Beat Box brass trio, an Italian opera singer, an
Eastern European accordian player, a Manouche Guitar duo, a Flamenco Duo, a
Banjo Player, and a Gypsy Fiddle/horn duo.
