February 28, 2007 - Reverting to his favorite past time, dressing stars, Valentino chose post W.W.II Hollywood as the theme for his fall Ready-to-Wear collection. Models came down the runway with made up as starlets with red glossy lips meant to evoke the elegance of the 40s. For evening, gossamer gowns sparkled with the embroidery of semiprecious stones, sequins and medallions. For day, tweed suits were touched up with tufts of fur, while elsewhere, overcoats cascaded in horizontal streams of mink.

It would be hard to say how the pieces shown today, beautiful though they might be, differ much from what has passed along Roman couturier's catwalk for the last ten years or so. I suppose Hollywood's glamour is timeless, though fashion is not.

At age 74, Valentino appears to have more energy than the Energizer Bunny. Nonetheless, his collections are mostly put together by a staff of young, inked and pierced British design students, interning at his atelier.
