Worlds Colliding

Marlene Dietrich and Chrissie Hynde were Eduardo Lucero’s unlikely muses this season. Though conceptually intriguing, Lucero’s slapdash merging of the manifestly different fashion sensibilities of these women ultimately resulted in a flamboyant collection that lacked consistency.

Mr. Lucero created velvet halter gowns, silk satin butterfly evening dresses, and bejeweled tailored coats, references to Marlene Dietrich’s red carpet razzle-dazzle. Even though the screen star’s gender bending trouser-suit clad look would have better served the designer, these pieces were indeed the stronger elements in the show. Later came the strangely out of place skin-tight leather pants, cropped crocodile jackets, and spider web tops.

Traces of inventive talent and a sharp intellect lurk in Lucero’s work; however, his focus remains shoddy at best. In the future, he needs to concentrate on flow and cohesion. Eduardo Lucero should cast aside the rock glam in favor of his true strength: constructing beautiful clothes for elegant women.
