Paris Menswear July 06

PARIS, July 4, 2006 - Gieves, the Savile Row tailors now showing a high fashion line in Paris, chose the lawn of the Polish Embassy on Rue Saint Dominique as the venue for their presentation entitled "I am a Camera". The English Garden Party atmosphere soon went sour on Monday afternoon, however, when the bar closed prematurely and throngs of parched fashion editors were forced to storm it in search of libation. Dare one imagine the only thing left were a few empty Vodka bottles and a lemon twist. The sweat bath and sun burned bacchanalia that followed lost all sense of the intended civility.

The collection fared better, as scarves twirled from the neck and handkerchiefs fluttered from pockets. Gieves is what it is - understated and refined, founded on finely cut suits and immaculate sports wear. The basic gray palette eventually branched out to include lots of greens, teal, aquamarine, lilac and tangerine. One military-style double breasted jacket colored mustard-yellow, looked hotter than the row of editors facing the western sun. Many of the pieces were hearty enough to stand up to a cool British summer, but hotly out of place on a sizzling summer afternoon in Paris.
