PARIS, July 4, 2006 - Pierre Cardin, aged 84, last showed a collection in
1996. His presentation on Monday was actually more of a retrospective, as
well as the occasion to unveil his new cultural center located in Beaubourg
just steps away from the Pompidou Centre.
But there was Cardin, immaculately dressed in blazer and tie, walking a set
of French journalists around his new digs while describing in precise detail
every idea he’d ever had. Most of the clothes, presented on plastic
mannequins, had been seen many times before. His space age 60s theme had been
reworked here and there, but the basic recipe had not really changed. Cardin
is what he is - the man who ran the atelier when Christian Dior unveiled his
“New Look”, and the person who more or less invented Ready-to-Wear.
Cardin’s star is of course longevity, but it’s also the fact that he’s
already been there and done that.
After the museum tour, guests were ushered up to a white room lit by sky
lighting, where an open bar and canapés catered by Maxims awaited.
