Masakï Matsushïma - On the Cutting Edge - click for photos

Matsushima

PARIS, July 5 - If there is one emerging designer to keep an eye on, it's Masakï Matsushïma, whose interesting show was staged in the cloisters of the Ecole des Beaux Arts on Monday morning. In what was a budget production (with all the problems that go along with a shoestring), the Japanese designer still showed he was cutting teeth.

Once he got through the shortie shorts and on to substance - tapered shirts with a bias cut, patches of silver trimming, horizontal zippers, Lang-ish split shirts with arm warmers, and pants with straps fluttering - his creativity became clear. Toss in one strap T-shirts worn beneath sleek black evening redingotes, and sexual tension took over.

Unnecessary repetition and cumbersome presentation got in the way of the core message, where one simple word could have solved numerous problems - cut!
