Downtown - Everything's Waiting For You

PARIS, October 10 - Jean-Louis Scherrer, under the design of Stéphan Rolland, has recently been trying lots of new angles. The boutique collection shown on Sunday morning was a case in point. But by the time Petula Clark had reached the refrain of "Downtown" on the soundtrack, the show had taken a decidedly old fashioned turn. You could almost imagine a youthful Bridgette Bardot or Sophia Loren dressed in some of the pieces that hit the runway. Tweed suits looked like a recycling of Chanel, only with flower pins that weren't quite camellias. Masculine high shoulder jackets and quilted tops were not terribly original, but perhaps it was for the best. Ubiquitous rhinestone brooches and belts proved that old habits die hard.
