Dolce & Gabanna
Written by Sedef Kokcuoglu

In the wake of Richard Avedon’s death, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana showcased their Spring 2005 collection, inspired by the timeless images the master photographer captured throughout his brilliant career. Sending out the quintessential glamazon, Naomi Campbell, clad in a skin tight python corset dress, crisscrossed along the torso, the dynamic duo bid a bitter-sweet adieu to the man who animated their imaginations with his art. It was touching, but more so it was fabulous.

Abandoning the bubblegum chic of sequined Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck t-shirts (and thankfully so) of the previous season, Dolce & Gabbana shifted gears to reclaim the delectably feminine essence that makes their clothes so great. This season Domenico and Stefano used two separate color palettes simultaneously—one a slew of metallic silvers and gold tints, the other, electric hues like, deep purple, blood red and fire orange. Also choosing to make ample use of the dangerously raw animal power embodied in the scaly texture of python, D&G incorporated this rare material into almost every piece they designed. Mixing snakeskin with more delicate fabrics such as tweed and lace did indeed produce spectacularly thrilling, irresistibly provocative ensembles.

Overall Dolce&Gabbana’s new skin tight creations are exploding with the sweet tinge of femme fatale venom. A Fashionlines favorite from this collection is the tightly fitted, lace eyelet jeans. Whether you choose to dress them up with an ostrich feather trimmed chiffon blouse or dress them down with a simple halter top, you will leave people wondering.
