JEWELS BY CHRISTINE

The House of Balmain seems to be downsizing. The small show staged between Lanvin and Saint Laurent on Sunday evening offered little proof that things are on the up and up. The optimum word was probably 'careful', as that looks to be the primary inspiration for Christophe Lebourg's second Ready-to-Wear collection for the label. And he did what he could: fitted suits worn with fur stoles, a split skirt here and there, and red leather interspersed with pinstripes ornamented with silk flowers. A gold lamé ensemble was mysteriously splattered with red droplets, and a peculiar quilted pattern was worked into eveningwear. Overall, it was good, not outstanding, which given the turbulence of the recent past, probably means smooth sailing for the designer and the board of directors.
