On Aura Tout Vu
By Timothy Hagy
Dreaming
"Yes, we dream, we continue to dream", said program notes from On Aura Tout Vu. And that sentiment sums up the state of the union on a Monday in January, 2004.
You need look no further than the dazzling and highly creative pieces, for instance a pale lavender ensemble of shredded chiffon appliqué dusted with sequins, to recognize the unbridled potential of this young design team.
With patchwork, pastel streamers, and ephemeral embroidery, which looked at times like spun moss, the collection was full of fanciful display. Splashes of medallions and spays of silver and gold sequins added glitter to the dreary day.
A chartreuse veil with gold embroidery, or the wedding dress of lace and chiffon dripping with melting icicles were just many of the prisms that reflect immense talent at play.
The show, staged in the basement of the Four Seasons Georges V, was chock full of treasures. But getting out of the basement, and into the tough world of couture, need not remain an elusive dream.
A lot of it looked like Christian Lacroix, and not surprisingly, the team does the embroidery for his couture collections. But what On Aura Tout Vu lacks is a sharper vision, a single eye for detail that takes all the pieces of the puzzle and puts them together with impeccable finesse. That is where
Lacroix excels, and that is where a more disciplined approach to the creative process might do the trick.
Sweet dreams are always nice, but eventually, waking up is hard to do.
