The Fall 2004 Dolce & Gabbana collection is reminiscent of that contagious one hit wonder, Mambo Number Five. "A little bit of Monica in my life. A little bit of Rita by my side. A little bit of Tina is what I need. A little bit of Jessica is all I see." Similar to Lou Bega's confused, chaotic love life, Dolce & Gabbana's new creations lack focus, consistency, substance and class. The strange mélange of 50s inspired pieces, kinky satin baby dolls, leopard print corsets missing side panels (worn over sheer stockings), Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse t-shirts, Fidel Castro military hats and many more thrift store spirited pieces (simply not worth mentioning) Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana conceived for this autumn, is an assault on the senses. Where are the dynamic duo's trademark smoldering evening gowns, slithering bra-strap dresses and innovatively exuberant designs? Why compromise distinctive style, Mediterranean sensuality and most importantly refined taste to ride the wave of eclecticism?
Since the idea of fashionable mismatching has been engraved in our social consciousness by Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City, bad taste has been lurking in the shadows, posing as modish panache. If a three quarter length fox coat, pink lingerie and baseball cap ensemble topped off by chandelier earrings is the new chic, most fashionistas shall inevitably proclaim themselves as passé.
The only Dolce & Gabbana clothes worth buying in the autumn are the well cut, impeccably tailored suits and satin tuxedos-sadly the only redeeming part of a nauseating sea of excess. Then there are the prim and proper cashmere camisoles held together by oversized broaches ala Prada and vintage YSL velvet two piece copycats worthy of note. Nevertheless why splurge on a knock off?
Finally, a Fashionlines warning to the wise: What ever you do, steer clear of going out sporting a pair of pink panties, clearly visible underneath a black lace evening dress with frilly skirts. That is, if you want to be able to live with yourself in the future.
