THIS MONTH:
PARIS Spring 2004

He said it was about protection, but Jean Paul Gautier's hooded full length bodysuits that covered even feet and fingers and were worn under each and every ensemble, seemed to me more about the culture of Sado-Masochism and the cult of full body latex. The most beautifully cut suits and coats of the season were in this collection, especially a brown, luxurious coat with a large cowl, which was the standout of the show. There is supposed to have been this theme of armor and protection as an undercurrent of the season, but it is wiser to simply look at each piece. Haute Couture is about luxury, and Gautier's bodysuits finally saw the runway sans coats or suits or dresses. They were luxurious enough on their on, and a wonderful alternative to the sweat suit.
