Columbian artist Orlando Agudelo-Botero was born in 1946 in a small town in the Andes, the eighth of twelve children. He was drawing by the age of three, encouraged by his mother, who gave him paper and pencils as presents. He was marked forever when his mother told his father that Orlando would be an artist. His mother died when Orlando was twelve, and he was sent to a Jesuit school in Medellin, where he entered art competitions. He drew a Madonna for a Mother’s Day celebration, and had his first exhibition at seventeen. His work explores the family, the mysteries of life, and emotion with strong yet delicate Christian overtones. He has lived in the United States since 1968—he currently has a studio in Hawaii—and his work has hit a nerve with collectors, who pay five figure sums for his large canvasses with gentle, universal themes.

Fashionlines usually shows a different sort of art, but I was taken by the humanity and dignity of Orlando’s work. I traveled to the small northern California town of Historic Folsom, where I soon learned I was not alone in seeing something special about this artist. At the beautiful Christine Wunder Fine Art Gallery, many of Orlando’s collectors were enjoying his new works. The canvasses were generous in size, with an enlarged sense of life, both here and the hereafter.

Orlando Agudelo-Botero was the recipient of the White House Hispanic Heritage Awards in the Arts, and contributed as a trustee of the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts. For the past few years his art has inspired the sets of the Hispanic Heritage Awards Ceremony, as well as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
