Ralph Rucci garnered a lot of attention this July when he became the first American invited to Paris to show couture under his own label since Mainbocher (a designer he admits to admiring).

Though his collection shown during New York Fashion Week could have used some lightening up, it did portray the vision of a pure artist’s eye, achieved through his impeccable cuts, abstract patterns, hand stitching, and perfect matching of fabrics. Season after season he ignores trends, and concentrates on perfect cut, fit, and execution as seen in his chartreuse ¾ coat worn over a simple black t shirt and white pant, the pale pink coat worn on Erin O’Connor, and his take on the shirtwaist dress (a la Claire McCardell and Halston).

Rucci cuts cashmere to resemble lace, embroiders linen, and always merges day and night…..as Neiman Marcus’s Joan Kaner (an avid fan and supporter) decrees, “he’s in a class by himself.”
