Not too many designers can reference Adolfo and Chanel and still look hip, young, sexy….and modern. But in Marc’s hands, that is not only possible, but a signature. To achieve the effect, the very spring- like Easter egg hued proper tweed coats and boxy jackets were paired with sexy, wispy lingerie inspired dresses and separates, and everything was shown with a very sexy high-heeled pointy-toed pump. Dresses were often ‘boned’ on top, bras peeked out of see thru blouses, lingerie inspired bra tops and satin camisoles often ‘fell’ off the models’ shoulders as they sauntered out, giving it a feel of Elizabeth Taylor in ‘Butterfield 8’.
The overall feeling is that everything is just a tad ‘off’…it’s the look of perfect imperfection. (But not the grooming- the hair and make-up were faultless, and the girls- including Gisele and most of the top models almost never looked more beautiful). And what would a Marc Jacobs collection be without his stellar coats? If you buy one thing, make it one of his tweeds, a belted cashmere bathrobe, or a traditional ‘Mac’ or trench….you can’t go wrong.
