Those of us who saw the Nicolas le Cauchois defile knew we were seeing a revelation. le Cauchois is a classically handsome Frenchman who brought out his very pregnant wife when he took his bows, but his clothes told a less conventional tale. The pale peach mousseline wedding gown had its right sleeve stitched around the hand—it would be rather difficult for the groom to put a ring on his bride’s finger unless he was willing to rip the dress. Entrance making evening coats, feathered “necklaces” over long “smoking” skirts, and my favorite, a black silk and chinchilla cocktail dress with billowing chinchilla sleeves set the glamorous but demanding tone to a new Parisian chic, rigorous, thoughtful and always elegant.
