Q: Why has yoga become so popular in the United States in the past decade?

A: The benefits of this 5,000 year old practice have found their way to mainstream culture via the spiritual longing of the post eighties/early nineties consumerism. Along with the chance to explore a deeply satisfying spiritual tradition over 5000 years old, yoga equally enhances physical fitness, slows the aging process, improves mental clarity and promotes an extraordinary sense of emotional well being. In addition, a regular practice alleviates high blood pressure, chronic stress, arthritis, chronic fatigue, heart conditions and many more ailments that plague modern society.

Q: please tell us a little bit about your background.

A: I was the founder and former CEO of the Gymboree Corporation, an international network of franchised play movement centers and company owned retail stores for children age birth to seven. I came to yoga as a pathway for my own healing from career burnout. As an entrepreneur, I wanted to share with others the system of breath and movement called Yoga that purifies the body in an effort to develop self-transformation.

Q: What do you think of Bikram yoga?

A: I am not a proponent of this system as it artificially heats the body to where poses are possible that otherwise one would not be able to do and injury is rampant. Also, the sincere spiritual components are missing.

Q: What are the circumstances in which a person should NOT do yoga?

A: Probably none, providing they are studying with a knowledgeable teacher who can adapt the asanas (poses) for them based on their on physical limitations.

Q: Why do yoga devotees look so much younger than their actual age?

A: The practice literally changes the endocrine system, improves circulation, the digestive system and various other body and mind connections that retard aging.
